Tina Knowles Reveals Beyoncé Was Bullied As a Child: ‘She Was Very Shy’© Provided by Billboard

Beyoncé may run the world now, but Tina Knowles has revealed that her daughter experienced her fair share of bullies back when the superstar was young.

In a video interview with Vogue posted Sunday (May 26), the businesswoman opened up about raising her daughters to embrace their individuality – no matter who tried to break their souls. “Beyoncé, she was very shy,” she shared. “She got bullied a bit.”

Bey is now a mom herself, with Ms. Tina taking on the role of grandmother to 12-year-old Blue Ivy and 6-year-old twins Rumi and Sir, whom the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer shares with Jay-Z. That means the vocalist is imparting onto her own children the same lessons she previously learned from Knowles, including the importance of blocking out the haters and focusing on one’s craft.

For instance, Knowles recently revealed that Bey had some wise words for Blue after her dancing at the Renaissance Tour received negative comments. “It was a great life lesson because her mom basically said, ‘Listen, if you let this get you down, then they won,” she recalled. “So you should go and work harder. And, you know, just work harder and get your skills together and go out there and blast it.'”

15 Musicians Who Have Collaborated With Their Kids: Beyoncé, Shakira & More

It’s a family business.

It takes just one star to become a household name, but a truly talented lineage to make for a powerful family legacy.

Such is the case for many of music’s biggest names, who have not only passed down their talents to their kids, but invited their offspring into the studio to record collaborations before they’re even out of booster seats. Take Blue Ivy and Rumi Carter, for instance: The two girls have already done something thousands of artists would kill for — duet with Beyoncé, who just so happens to be their mom. The elder sister is one of history’s youngest Grammy winners, thanks to her participation at nine years old in Bey’s “Brown Skin Girl” music video, while six-year-old Rumi’s cameo on “Protector” was one of the buzziest parts of the “Texas Hold ‘Em” superstar’s Cowboy Carter album. It helps to know the boss.

Once in a blue moon, though, a musician’s child will grow up to become a superstar just like their parents. Just look at Billy Ray Cyrus, who collaborated with daughter Miley in her Hannah Montana days before the “Flowers” singer went on to become a full-fledged pop icon in her own right. Nancy Sinatra, Matteo Bocelli and Landon Barker have all also developed their own successful music careers independently of their parents over the years, keeping the family business going strong.

Keys featured her son Egypt on a cover of “Over the Rainbow” for her Sweet Dreams EP. The singer also shares a second boy, Genesis, with star producer husband Swizz Beatz.

Having passed on his vocal gifts to his children, Andrea Bocelli often teams up with his second-born son, Matteo — whom he shares with ex-wife Enrica Cenzatti — and has also started singing with his daughter Virginia, whom he welcomed in 2012 with now-wife Veronica Berti. The trio released a holiday album, A Family Christmas, in 2022.

The Bocelli patriarch also shares oldest son Amos with ex-wife Cenzatti.

Beyoncé has featured both her girls on songs, starting with firstborn Blue Ivy Carter on 2013’s “Blue” followed by the 2019 Lion King: The Gift track “Brown Skin Girl.” Later, little sis Rumi would make her musical debut on Bey’s “Protector.”

The superstar also shares Sir — Rumi’s twin brother — with Jay-Z.

Both of Armstrong’s sons, Joey and Jakob — whom he shares with wife Adrienne — grew up to be musicians. And while the trio hasn’t gotten in the studio together yet, the Green Day frontman has performed with his sons a number of times, most notably covering Tommy James & the Shondells’ “I Think We’re Alone Now” with them on The Late Late Show With James Corden in 2020.

Billy Ray Cyrus has worked with daughter Miley Cyrus on a number of projects, including several songs for Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana franchise, in which they both starred. He also duetted with the pop great on the final track of his 2007 album Home at Last, “Ready, Set, Don’t Go.”

Billy Ray also shares Brandi, Trace, Braison and Noah with ex-wife Tish Cyrus, as well as Christopher Cody with ex-girlfriend Kristen Luckey.

Underwood teamed up for a festive duet on “Little Drummer Boy” with her son Isaiah, whom she shares with husband Mike Fisher (along with her second-born, Jacob). The track appeared on the country star’s 2020 Christmas album My Gift.

Both of Chris Martin’s kids, whom he shares with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, earned credits on Coldplay’s album Music of the Spheres in 2021. Their daughter, Apple, was billed as a songwriter on the band’s Selena Gomez collaboration “Let Somebody Go,” while their son Moses can be heard singing alongside his father on the chorus of “Humankind.”
