In 2022, the music manager appeared on the NPR podcast, The Limits with Jay Williams, and spoke about the deal which granted him the rights to music from multiple artists including Taylor’s first six albums.

The entertainment executive responded to the controversy by acknowledging his mistake and expressing a lesson learned. In an interview with Jay, he hinted at Big Machine owner Scott Borchetta when he mentioned being under a strict non-disclosure agreement (NDA) during the deal, preventing him from informing any artists.

Scooter suggested that he wasn’t as realistic as he should have been when finalizing the agreement. He expressed excitement about collaborating with every artist on the label and intended to make phone calls to share the news. However, before he could do so, “all hell broke loose.”

Reflecting on the situation, he admitted regret for assuming that everyone involved would understand his intentions and character once the deal was done and would be willing to work with him.

‘And I made that assumption with people that I didn’t know.’

The New York native claimed he learned an important lesson from the controversy. ‘I can never make that assumption again. I can’t put myself in a place of, you know, arrogance to think that someone would just be willing to have a conversation and be excited to work with me.’

In a lengthy Tumblr post, the Grammy winner accused Scooter of ‘incessant, manipulative bullying’ and claiming that he and Scott both knew what they were doing with the deal.

She said: ‘Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.’

As of now, Taylor has completed the re-recording process for four out of her six albums. These re-releases feature expanded deluxe edition tracks, previously unreleased “From the Vault” tracks, and other rarities.

Taylor achieved a remarkable feat with all four of these re-releases topping the Billboard 200 albums chart. The streak began with the release of “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” in April 2021, followed by a re-recorded version of her immensely popular album “Red” in November of the same year.

The culmination of this project came with the release of “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” in October 2023, marking the fourth consecutive re-release to reach the top of the Billboard 200 chart. These re-recordings, collectively dubbed “Taylor’s Version,” showcase her commitment to reclaiming ownership of her music and ensuring her artistic legacy remains intact.

Two years later, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) dropped in July 2023, followed by 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in October 2023.

The run of re-releases was particularly impressive, as Swift also released four new studio albums during that time period: Lover (2019), Folklore (2020), Evermore (2020) and Midnights (2022), with a fifth, The Tortured Poets Department, which released in April.

Now that four re-recordings are in the can, Taylor only has her debut and Reputation left to complete her promise to do her first six albums.

By re-recording, Taylor is technically covering her own songs as new recordings, resulting in new masters she now fully owns, giving her licensing control.
