The addictive blend of gritty sci-fi and brutal action in the universe of Warhammer 40,000 is about to see a big expansion, as Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, the sequel to the critically acclaimed 2011 game, has been confirmed for release this year.

Bringing with it a story and gameplay mechanics best described as a cross between “Helldivers 2 and God of War,” there’s much to be excited about for Space Marine 2, and even renowned Hollywood actor and Warhammer 40K fan Henry Cavill could attest to that.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is set for a September 2024 release, announced by developer Saber Interactive and publisher Focus Entertainment. The game will launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms, offering pre-order bonuses such as an “Ultramarine Inspired skin set” with distinctive weapon and armor customizations.

The release date has been eagerly anticipated, yet gameplay specifics remain closely protected. Nonetheless, the four trailers released thus far provide some insights. They reveal the game’s ambiance and characters, suggesting a revival of the dynamic, brutal combat that characterized the original game.

In the sequel, players will resume the role of Lt. Titus, a genetically modified Space Marine from the Ultramarines Chapter. Titus now confronts a novel menace – the Tyranids, a voracious insect-like alien species bent on galactic conquest. Despite resemblances to an enemy faction in Helldivers 2, rest assured, there is no infringement involved.

The trailers also unveil some of the weaponry at Titus’ command. Players can anticipate a recognizable array of arms, including the iconic bolter rifle, the adaptable plasma gun, and the formidable power sword.

Emphasis on close-quarters combat seems to have increased, with trailers depicting Titus deploying the wrath of his chainsword against the Tyranid swarms.

Regarding the storyline, details are sparse, but the trailers imply that Space Marine 2 will continue where the first game left off. Titus, now equipped with a new Mark X Power Armor, seems to be confronting the consequences of previous allegations of heresy by Inquisitor Thrax.

It’s also evident that Titus has undergone the Rubicon Primaris, a surgery that enhances a Space Marine’s physical capabilities, due to him being faster, more muscular, and potential weapon on the battlefield. It all sounds amazing, and come May 23, Saber will talk more about the game at the Warhammer Skulls event.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is set to release on 9 September 2024.
